How Small Lessons Build the Foundation for Lifelong Mental Health
May is Mental Health Awareness Month. Conversations about mental health often focus on crisis and intervention, but some of the most important work happens much earlier. For the young children we work with at Friends - Colorado, the quiet, everyday moments our Friends share with youth teach them how to cope, connect, and believe in themselves. Together, they are building a foundation of resilience and positive mental health outcomes in the years to come.
When Jayla*'s backpack was accidentally ruined at school, she was confronted by a challenging situation. She is in kindergarten, so it was a big deal that one of her favorite things was destroyed. Disappointment is real at any age, and how a child learns to navigate it matters enormously.
Jayla's teacher explained the situation to her Friend, Carly. Rather than simply fixing the problem, Carly sat with Jayla in that disappointment and used it as an opportunity to practice two foundational life skills: problem-solving and communication. Together, they worked through the emotions of the situation, and Jayla found a new backpack she loved at our clubhouse.
But the story didn't end there. Jayla wanted to say thank you to her teacher for helping her through those challenging moments, so she and Miss Carly got to work. They sharpened pencils, gathered erasers, drew a heartfelt card, and tied it all together with a big pink bow. And when Jayla presented her gift, she beamed with pride because she had turned an experience that could have been entirely negative into a positive act for someone else.
97% of youth in our program report having things they feel proud of, reflecting strong self-efficacy and positive identity development. For Jayla, that moment of pride from turning a tough situation into something positive is resilience taking root. She's a child learning that she is capable, that her feelings are manageable, and that she has the power to make someone else's day brighter. These are the foundations of positive mental health, and they start here with support from a Friend.
